“We designed the building as part of the overall WELL Certified Community to provide a holistic and healthy lifestyle,” said Trent Tesch, Principal Architect at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates.
“Our design for Heron reflects these themes through scale, materiality and architectural expression.”
Inspired by the natural structure, purity, and vitality of Florida’s coral reefs, Heron by Kohn Pedersen Fox is a one-to-many residential tower on the Tampa waterfront, designed and designed to promote the physical and mental well-being of its residents.
Heron was recently awarded the 2022 International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: The Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.
Unique on Tampa’s waterfront, Heron marks the start of the city’s famous river walk.
A pair of “fraternal” towers are connected by a shopping podium that activates the cityscape and attracts visitors from the surrounding area.
Cladding is kept to a minimum in favor of slab form, structural concrete on the tower, and perforated metal on the podium. Combining rough and refined textures, the design pays homage to the environment and highlights the structure’s streamlined form. While the western tower has a direct connection to the ground, the eastern tower is elevated and mounted on sculpted wood columns, providing residents with an unforgettable front door.
The leaning towers face the water, maximizing the distance between the two volumes to optimize daylight exposure and unobstructed views. The rounded balcony serves both as a shading element for the apartment below and as a light diffuser. The angular changes at the junctions of the various balconies describe the scale of the interior spaces, making the blocks themselves a hallmark of the tower.
At podium level, perforated metal screens shade the outdoor car park and slope slightly to capture light and bring the façade to life.
Reflecting the health-focused vision of Tampa Water Street, the world’s first WELL-certified community, Heron was built to LEED Gold standards and includes facilities and programs designed to promote health and overall well-being.
