Eight people died in four fatal crashes in Ventura County over the weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol.
In the latest crash, a man died after colliding with another vehicle on South Highway 101 in Oxnard on Sunday evening.
Five more people were killed in a head-on collision near Mugu Rock on the Pacific Coast Highway early Sunday morning. A man died Saturday night after crashing into a tree in Oxnard and another died Saturday in Santa Paula after his car hit a fence and overturned.
All lanes of Highway 101 southbound are closed for several hours Sunday evening through Monday due to a fatal accident between a motorcycle and a car north of the Rice Avenue exit around 10:15 pm Sunday.
CHP officials said a 2018 Honda Civic driver crashed into a motorcyclist from behind while the two motorcyclists were traveling at high speed. The collision caused the motorcyclist to jump off the bike and be hit by several other drivers on the motorway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The CHP identified the victim as a 59-year-old man, but withheld his identity until relatives were notified by the Ventura County medical examiner’s office.
CHP officials said a 2018 Honda Civic was found abandoned near the crash site and the driver fled the scene on foot. Investigators searched the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and the Ventura Police Department but did not find the driver.
The search and investigation closed South Highway 101 at Rice Avenue for several hours, but all closures were removed at 8 a.m. Monday.
Further investigation by CHP revealed that the owner of the car was a 31-year-old man from Oxnard. Authorities found the man at an undisclosed location in Camarillo, where he was arrested on suspicion of murder, run over and felony drunk driving. According to online prison records, he is being held in the county jail on $550,000 bail.
The accident in Santa Paula occurred around 10 p.m. Saturday in the 11000 block of Foothill Road, west of Aliso Canyon Road.
The driver of a 1995 Jeep Wrangler jumped out of his car after crashing into a metal mesh fence on the side of the road, causing the car to roll over on its side. The victim, identified as a 48-year-old man from Ventura County, died at the scene from his injuries.
CHP investigators said the victim was driving east on Foothill Road at the time of the crash. It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, which is being investigated by the CHP office in Ventura.
As of Monday morning, officials had not released the names of those killed in the crash over the weekend.
